Session Abstract

How does one begin to think about the regulatory requirements associated with the use of nuclear energy in a district energy system?  This introduction will cover the current state of regulation by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) – the lead federal agency for nuclear safety and environmental regulation.  The impact of various models for nuclear reactor ownership and operations/maintenance on the end-users’ involvement with the NRC will be addressed.  Ongoing efforts to reflect the characteristics of advanced reactors in the NRC’s framework for initial licensing and operational oversight will be highlighted.
