Dartmouth President Philip J. Hanlon ’77 has called on Dartmouth to play a leadership role in improving global sustainability and overcoming the challenges of climate change. As such, Dartmouth has committed to improving the efficiency of its energy production and distribution systems and to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions. Specifically, Dartmouth has pledged to achieve the following Green Energy Goals as outlined in its 2017 sustainability road map:
Dartmouth’s heating load is currently met predominantly through a co-generation plant that burns #6 fuel oil, and a steam distribution system that pipes steam throughout campus. Since 2010, Dartmouth has undertaken significant energy efficiency initiatives, which have resulted in nearly a one-quarter reduction in fuel consumption. In 2018, Dartmouth burned 3.5 million gallons of oil, down from 4.6 million in 2010. However, in order to achieve its Green Energy Goals, Dartmouth will need to implement significant changes to its energy infrastructure and is seeking a private partner to bring expertise and resources to help execute many of those changes as outlined in the Request for Qualifications attached below.
