Microgrids have the potential to fundamentally re-shape the way power is generated, distributed, and consumed. Advances in small generation technology and controls used to dispatch and optimize generation sources can provide benefits to utilities, power consumers, and open access to power in the developing world. Smart application of Microgrids can reduce the cost of generation and enhance reliability and resiliency while lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Black & Veatch is an active participant in this market and has taken a major step in advancing the technology by installing an innovative Microgrid at our World Headquarters in Kansas City. The facility incorporates multiple power generation sources and is integrated with the building’s heating system to enhance efficient. The Microgrid also incorporates innovative design features such as optimization of generation from each source and the ability to seamlessly connect and dis-connect from the power grid.
The presentation will provide a case study on this Microgrid system and will discuss lessons learned and best practices developed through the execution of this project. Potential applications of similar techniques used on this project will also be reviewed.
