Summary
Austria's largest wastewater treatment project is harnessing wastewater to generate energy and improve Vienna’s climate balance.
The pre-thickened sewage sludge is turned into sewage gas of 60 percent methane, which is then burned in combined heat and power plants. The energy generated is converted into electricity via generators; the waste heat generated is then used for heating and hot water preparation – to heat the digesters, among others.
