Summary
Eastman Business Park (EBP) in Rochester, New York, is a state-of-the-art, 1,200-acre industrial park home to over 100 research and manufacturing companies. The site, which also serves as the historic base for Kodak, is a core economic development growth driver for greater Rochester. RED-Rochester, LLC (RED), the owner and operator of EBP’s utility assets, is one of North America’s largest district energy systems. With efficient and balanced combined heat and power (CHP) assets, the site includes 1.5 million pounds per hour of boiler capacity, 117 megawatts (MW) of steam turbine generators (STG), plus chillers and other equipment. These systems serve a suite of 17 different utility services, including electricity, steam, chilled water, wastewater, nitrogen, compressed air and various process waters.
As part of its new cogeneration (cogen) facility—the addition of which was carefully studied, evaluated and planned to support load increase needs—RED opted to relocate, refurbish and upgrade a 1990-built 38 MW General Electric (GE) Frame 6B Gas Turbine Generator (GTG) paired with a new heat recovery steam generator (HRSG). RMF Engineering and Frank Lill & Son played a key role in giving it a second life and enabling its efficient reuse in RED’s plant, drawing from a dated operations and management manual to reverse engineer the foundation, electrical system interface, and its requirements for operation, requiring out-of-the-box thinking and a few nontraditional component procurement strategies.
