Backed by £72.7 million in funding, the Waterloo and South Bank Heat Network will use a water source heat pump to extract heat from the River Thames, distributing it through underground pipes.
This network could provide low-carbon heating to major buildings including the National Theatre and King’s College London.
Developers Hemiko said this area-wide model offers a more efficient and cost-effective way to decarbonise heating, compared to installing individual heat pumps in each building.
